Indication(s) & Dosage Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gastrointestinal tract spasm
Adult: As hydrochloride: 135 mg orally tid or 100 mg tid. MR (modified-release) preparation: 200 mg orally bid. As embonate: 150 mg tid.
Child: As hydrochloride: 3-4 yr: 25 mg orally; 4-8 yr: 50 mg orally; 8-10 yr: 100 mg orally; >10 yr: 135-150 mg orally. All doses may be given tid. Modified-release preparation: Not recommended.
Administration Should be taken with food. Take immediately before or during meals.
Contraindications Paralytic ileus.
Special Precautions Severe hepatic or renal impairment; cardiac disorders e.g. heart block; porphyria. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy and lactation.
Adverse Drug Reaction(s) GI disturbances, dizziness, headache, insomnia, anorexia, decreased heart rate, hypersensitivity reactions.
Storage Oral: Conventional prep: Store at or below 30°C. MR (modified-release) prep: Store at 5-25°C.
Pharmacology Mebeverine is an antispasmodic agent which exerts direct action on the GI smooth muscle.
Absorption: Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract (oral); peak plasma concentrations within 1-3 hr.
Distribution: Protein-binding: 75% to albumin.
Metabolism: Hydrolysed completely in the liver to veratric acid and mebeverine alcohol.
Excretion: Via urine (as metabolites).

Why Mebeverine is needed?

Mebeverine is used as an adjunct to treat spasms of the stomach or intestine, particularly spasms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). 

IBS refers to a disorder that involves abdominal pain and cramping, as well as changes in bowel movements such as constipation or diarrhoea.

Mebeverine belongs to a group of medicines called antispasmodics.

How to take Mebeverine?

Take Mebeverine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Mebeverine must be taken regularly for it to be effective. Continue with Mebeverine even if there are signs of improvement. Do not stop Mebeverine unless instructed by the doctor.

Take Mebeverine preferably 20 minutes before meals.

If you have been given tablets, swallow the tablet whole. Do not cut, chew or crush the tablet.

If you have been given capsules, swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew the capsule.

If you have been given oral liquid, use the measuring spoon to measure out your prescribed dose. Shake the liquid well before use.

What to do if I have forgotten to take Mebeverine?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor know.

When not to use Mebeverine?

Do not take Mebeverine if you have paralytic ileus (a condition where the small bowel does not work properly).

What to consider while taking Mebeverine?

Inform your doctor if you have:
- liver or kidney problems
- heart disease 
- porphyria (a rare blood pigment disorder)

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What side effects could appear?

Mebeverine may make you dizzy. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be Inform.

The side effects with Mebeverine may include stomach and intestinal disturbances, headache, difficulty in sleeping, loss of appetite and decreased heart rate. 

Inform your doctor if you develop skin rash, itching and swelling. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Mebeverine.

Can I take this with other medicines?

Always inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.

What special dietary instructions to follow?

Avoid alcohol.

How to store Mebeverine?

Do not store above 30°C. 

Keep away from the reach of children. Medicines must be used within the expiry date mentioned.
